It's not what you see, it's what goes on behind the scenes. Australia, the warrantless colony.

Air NZ new their own financial position when they excercised their 'pre-emptive right' to purchase the remaining 50% of Ansett Australia when bidding against Singapore Airlines in 2000 for the price of 680 million (Air NZ recorded losses for the 99/00 fiscal year of over 1.4 Billion). effectively Air NZ became 'A sparrow trying to carry an Eagle on it's back'.
Air NZ also wanted a 'direct cash injection', & not via Ansett. S.A eventually bought into Air NZ directly, purchasing 25% of it's shares. The other 85% is now a public company, due to the NZ gov saving it, to the tune of 800 million. Air NZ simply wanted better aircraft, parts & a larger fleet at the expense of an Australin icon. It (Air NZ) even paid the Australian government a pathetic 150 million to stop an investigation into Ansett's collapse. Which the Aust Gov agreed to.... Shocking! ....& if Air NZ had nothing to hide why do that. Ultimately, when the AU Gov did agree they cited "it would be to expensive & risky to investigate".... Sack 16000 pollies in one day & see if the AU Gov investigates.... Hmmmmm....
When Ansett asked the Howard gov for a loan of 500 million to keep it going, it not only declined but the CASA grounded entire fleets of Ansett 2 days before christmas (2000)& then again 1 day before easter (2001), the highest revenue earning periods of the year, citing maintenance issues on 767's. The 767 in question was already grounded by Ansett itself & promptly told the CASA of the issue. These issues were known by the Boeing corporation & it had released a bulletin to airlines about the problem, yet the CASA did nothing to make it a 'Directive' at which time airlines have to then 'legally' act upon it. Yet Ansett did not wait, they had already taken the aircraft out of service. CASA covered it's own incompetence by taking harsh actions against Ansett. Effectivly taking the spotlight off itself.
Meanwhile Quantas has had numerious actual incidences (no nose wheel apon landing, etc) yet no directive has ever been issued.
It just so happened that 3/4 of the pollies who ran the CASA at the time had thousands of shares in the Qantas frequent flyer program, which after Ansett & it's superior F.F program collapse, the Qantas F.F program shares... went through the roof,... A mere coincidence....
Ansett would still be flying if only one change was made. Singapore Airlines (S.A) should have been able to buy the remaining 50% of Ansett Australia. It (S.A) was globally superior, cashed up & capable of turning Ansett around. Ansett International would also have expanded over the most recent years now that the Asian market collapse of 1997 has ended.
We place to much trust in single people & higher education. The only university I ever attended is called 'Real life Uni', majoring in 'common sense'. This 'greatest singular act of mass unemployment' would never have happened had someone asked to see Air NZ's financial position in 2000, before it bought the remaining 50% of Ansett. Yet not 1 person did. Nobody. Therefore 15000 people lost their jobs in one day.... I included.
