Jill Meagher investigation police 'bungle'

From the Herald Sun article (26 Sep 2012):

Chief Commissioner Ken Lay is ‘more than satisfied' with the handling of the Jill Meagher investigation

TOP cop Ken Lay says he is "more than satisfied" with the handling of the Jill Meagher investigation, despite conflicting reports about what action was taken when she was reported missing.

The Chief Commissioner said yesterday the ABC worker's phone and bank details were checked at the weekend after husband Tom notified police of her disappearance.
But on Sunday at 5pm, Acting Sergeant Steve Bull said officers hadn't obtained the information because it was the weekend.

"Unfortunately, the weekend makes it difficult," Sgt Bull said.

"Hopefully all that will get done tomorrow."

But yesterday Mr Lay said checks had been done at the weekend.

"We did speak to the NAB on the weekend, we did conduct those checks," he told ABC radio.

It was also revealed yesterday police did not ask the State Emergency Service to assist with any searches until after her handbag was discovered by a passerby on Monday.
Mr Lay said comprehensive searches were carried out on Saturday.
"I'm advised there was an extensive search at the weekend that did not find that handbag," he said.
"Either police have missed that or someone has placed the bag back at that location.
"They conducted quite an extensive search of the area, they spoke to a number of people and they carried out an investigation ... as required to do as policy.
"There was a good response on the Saturday, there was a good response on the Sunday and we've put the resources in to try and resolve this. This is a difficult, difficult case."

Comes either misinformation or mishandling of the investigation.

Police initially said, that as this matter evloved on the weekend, they were unable to obtain records until Monday.

The reality of the case it that National Australia Bank's SOC (Security Operations Centre) is open 24/7, so someone has put out misleading information out, and as it turns out the source was the police.

Police had to go into damage control mode amidst the 'bungle' picked up and reported, so they got the "Top Dog" to intervene, who no one would dare to question.
