He will have to do 200 hours of unpaid community work, undergo alcohol and psychiatric counseling and complete behavioural programs.
Mr Garnett said he would have jailed Nixon had it not been for several factors, including a lack of prior convictions for violence and his guilty plea.
Nixon said nothing as he left the court this afternoon.Having heard details of how Nixon assaulted his former fiancee Tegan Gould in his Port Melbourne apartment, Mr Garnett said Nixon's offending was serious.
Mr Garnett said the gravity of offending outweighed just a conviction and fine as was requested by Nixon's lawyer.
In it she stated how she was left embarrassed and humiliated.
"I felt the need to change my identity/appearance," she wrote.
Earlier, Nixon pleaded guilty to assaulting his former fiancee and escaping police custody during a wild night at his apartment.
On the same day Nixon, now 49, is eligible to re-apply for his player manager licence, he pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to grabbing Ms Gould’s throat, pushing her head against a wall, holding her down and hit her while inside his apartment.
He also pleaded guilty to running from officers who tackled him to the ground after a short chase.
Crown prosecutor Kieran Gilligan told Mr Garnett that Nixon and Ms Gould were engaged to be married after a year-long relationship but had split and remained acquaintances.
Mr Gilligan said Ms Gould used a key to let herself into Nixon’s apartment in the early hours of July 15 last year, and hopped into his bed.
The two argued on the bed when Nixon arrived home, the court heard.
It was then that Nixon grabbed Ms Gould around the throat and put his other hand behind her head “for leverage”, Mr Gilligan read from an agreed prosecution summary.
Ms Gould’s breathing was affected, the court was told.
Nixon yelled obscenities at Ms Gould, calling her a “f---ing bitch”.
He then pushed her head against a wall and held her down and hit her in the face and her temples, Mr Gilligan said.
Ms Gould ran from the apartment and police arrived and placed Nixon under arrest.
Nixon bolted from police who tackled him to the ground about 30 metres away.
Ms Gould suffered bruising to her throat, neck, eyes and jaw during the assault and feared for her safety at the time, Mr Gilligan told the court.
Defence lawyer Theo Alexander said Nixon was not proud or happy about his conduct.
Mr Alexander said Nixon’s guilty plea reflected his level of remorse.
It was not “profitable” to “delve into the hows and whys” of the evening’s events, Mr Alexander said.
The court was told that Nixon, who is currently doing charity work, was “floating in isolation” and turned to alcohol before the incident.
He more recently spent time in a Queensland rehabilitation clinic for alcohol and psychiatric issues.
Nixon told the court he attended the clinic because he was suffering post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Since then I’ve spent every day getting my life back together,” Nixon told Mr Garnett.
“I’m truly sorry for what’s happened.”
Nixon’s guilty pleas related to single charges of intentionally causing injury and escaping police custody.
Other charges were struck out.

As a general rule judges are quick to make an example of the 'cannon fodder' who misbehave, by sending them to jail.
This sends out a message ( nee sets precedence) for all those men in acrimonious relationships to beat some sense into that “f---ing bitch”.
But then one must be part of the supported 'corporatocracy' to be supported by dinosaur judges, and the corrupt legals system.
The new Australian 'religion' is AFL (Australian Football League) which in spite of all the corruption, and illicit drug trade, must remain the 'untainted' institution to keep the herd population amused.
One can only aspire to Rick Nixon's wife bashing with total support of the (Anglo-Masonic) legal system.
