SUBWAY fans thinking they're opting for a healthy lunch could be in for a shock.
According to new research, the meals contain nearly as many calories and more salt than those in McDonald's.
Researchers
from the University of California Los Angeles found that teenagers who
bought Subway meals consumed almost the same calories - and more salt -
those who ate a meal at McDonald’s, the
Mail Online reports.
The study found eating at both restaurants is likely to lead to overeating and obesity.
The US research will come as a shock to those who consume Subway meals in the belief that they are choosing a healthier option.
"Every day, millions of people eat at McDonald's and Subway, the two
largest fast-food chains in the world," Dr Lenard Lesser told the Mail Online. "With childhood obesity at record levels, we need to know the health impact of kids' choices at restaurants."
Using
the estimated calorie counts from information on the McDonald's and
Subway websites, Dr Lesser said the UCLA researchers found there was "no
statistically significant difference between the two restaurants, and
that participants ate too many calories at both".
The sandwiches
bought by the study's participants from Subway in the US averaged 784
calories, compared to 572 calories at McDonald’s in the US, the
Mail Online reports.
Worryingly, the salt intake at Subway averaged at 2149 mg while
McDonald's was around 1829 mg. The authors suggested that the higher
sodium content of the Subway meals likely came from the restaurant's
processed meat.
Dr Lesser recommended that McDonald's customers
eliminate sugary drinks and French fries and said Subway fans should opt
for smaller subs and ask for less meat, the
Mail Online said.
